Female students at Abia State University expressed joy as they moved into a newly renovated hostel, marking an improvement in their living conditions.

Over 5,000 female students at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, have begun moving into a newly renovated hostel, sparking excitement and celebration on campus. The renovation was completed as part of a promise made earlier this year by the state governor and Visitor to the university, Dr. Alex Otti, during his visit in March 2025.
During that visit, Governor Otti committed not only to refurbishing the rundown hostels but also to constructing a new Faculty of Law building, additional hostels, and a cafeteria, as part of a broader initiative to improve infrastructure at the university.
President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Emma Ugoani, called the move a “welcome development” and thanked the governor for his swift intervention in improving student welfare.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ndukwe J. Okeudo, while inspecting the facility before students moved in, praised the transformation as a “remarkable turnaround” and said the upgraded hostel now meets international standards. He expressed gratitude to Governor Otti and prayed for continued support in fulfilling other development promises.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, encouraged students to take care of the new facilities, stressing that responsible use would motivate the state government to continue investing in their wellbeing.
Meanwhile, Hon. Victor Ochie, Chairman of Dav Notch Nigeria Ltd, the construction company handling the hostel renovation, confirmed that work on other hostels would begin once current occupants are relocated.
Features of the Renovated Hostel Include:
- 5,000-bed capacity
- Brand-new steel double bunk beds with 6-inch mattresses
- Furnished rooms with desks and reading lamps
- State-of-the-art common room
- Fire hose reels and active water supply for safety
- Kitchens and laundry rooms on each floor
- Constant water supply
- Public address system for announcements
This development marks a significant step forward in improving living standards for students at ABSU.
