Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday announced the suspension of legislative activities indefinitely as part of measures to contain the spread of the dread Coronavirus.


The decision to restrict visitors’ movement to the Assembly’s complex was also taken at the Thursday’s plenary held in Ado-Ekiti and presided over by the Speaker, Mr Funminiyi Afuye.
The DAILY POST reports that earlier, the Chairman House Committee on Health, Mrs Teju Okunyiga under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, informed the House of one found case of Covid-19 in the State.
Okunyiga then called for precautionary measures to contain further spread of the disease.
Other members who spoke on the matter who included, Mrs Yemisi Ayokunle, Ch., Gboyega Aribisogan, the Majority Leader, and Abiodun Fawekun, (Ido/Osi Constituency 1) suggested that aside the Assembly’s complex, public places like schools should be shut down at least for now.
Commenting, the Speaker, Mr Funminiyi Afuye said, ” Activities at the Ekiti House of Assembly is hereby suspended as suggested by members, until further notice when the tension about the dread Coronavirus is doused.”
He, however, allayed the fear of residents, saying though the Covid-19 is real but that the government is on top of the situation.

Members of the Assembly were advised to sensitize their constituents against social interaction, on regular washing of hands and unnecessary handshake among others that could cause the spread of the disease in Ekiti.
DAILY POST reported that two bills, which are, The Ekiti Housing Corporation (Amendment), Bill, 2020 and Law to Prohibit Discriminatory Against Persons With Disabilities, 2020 were unanimously passed at Thursday’s plenary.
The passage of the bills followed the adoption of the reports of the House Committees on Lands and Housing and Women Affairs and Social Development as submitted by their Chairmen, Mr Ayodeji Ajayi and Mrs Adekemi Balogun respectively.
The Assembly, thereafter, adjourned plenary sitting ‘sine die’ as moved by Gboyega Aribisogan and seconded by Mr Tunde Idowu,(Ikere Constuency). Source:
