The professorship is a very honorable academic status. People always attribute such status to men. Nigeria was able to produce her first female professor in the year 1973.
This article presents to us the first woman to attain the status of a professor in Nigeria, Mrs. Omolara Adetowun Ogunsheye. She had a lot of first attached to her history.
Be reminded that the first tertiary institution in Nigeria was established in the year 1947, Yaba Tech, and this very woman was the only female among the first set of students of the institution.
Professor Omolara Adetowun Ogunsheye was an Ogun State indigen who was born in Benin, the present Edo State in 1926. She became a professor in the year 1973 at the University of Ibadan, the first Nigeria woman to attain the status.

The young Adetowun attended Queen’s College for her Secondary education and progressed to Yaba Tech where she earned a diploma in 1948. In 1952, she had her first degree in Geography from Newnham University and a Master’s degree from Cambridge University, United Kingdom all on scholarship in 1956.
Adetowun taught Geography in Anglican Girl’s Grammar School, Ilesa and in St. Anne’s School, Ibadan. She later joined University of Ibadan and headed the department of Library Studies. Most honorably, she was pronounced a professor at University of Ibadan in 1973.

- She is the first female student of YabaTech, not just the first female student, she is also the only female among the first set of students of the institution.
- She was the first female to earn a certificate from Yaba College of Technology and the only female among the 1948 graduands of the school.
- First Nigeria woman to become a professor and the first to be made dean of a university faculty. Omolara Adetowun Ogunsheye bacame a dean immediately she was made a professor.
