Anambra Sacks Six Head Teachers For Extorting Pupils in Violation of Free Education Policy

The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has dismissed six head teachers from Awada Primary School for extorting pupils through unauthorized levies, reaffirming the state’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption and commitment to free education.

The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has dismissed six head teachers for undermining Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s free and compulsory education policy by imposing unauthorized levies on pupils.

ASUBEB’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Vera Nkiru Nwadinobi, revealed at a press briefing that the sacked teachers, all from Awada Primary School, were found guilty of extorting students for various illegitimate fees. The affected head teachers—Mrs. Okoye Uju, Mrs. Nwafor Eunice Nwanneka, Mrs. Nwakaku Patience Obioma, Mrs. Aniwetalu Elizabeth Ekene, Mrs. Odionu Gloria Nkolika, and Mrs. Muluako Augustine Chinwe—have been ordered to refund the collected money and hand over to their successors.

Dr. Nwadinobi emphasized that the state government will not tolerate such actions, warning that any further violations will lead to outright dismissal. She highlighted the government’s commitment to free education by abolishing PTA levies and recruiting over 8,000 teachers in the last two years.

An investigative team uncovered extensive cases of extortion at schools, including Awada Primary School 1-6, where students were charged for extra lessons, marker ink, pens, novels, and other items. Unauthorized levies included:

• Toilet cleaning fees (N200 per child), despite a government-provided N50,000 monthly fund.

• Compiled exam questions, send-forth contributions, and burial levies.

• Inflated Common Entrance Examination fees beyond the approved N2,900.

ASUBEB has urged parents and guardians to report any unauthorized fees to authorities and collaborate with the government to eliminate corruption in the education system. Dr. Nwadinobi assured the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding free and compulsory education in the state.
