Confusion erupted at Kaduna State University as the Vice-Chancellor announced the suspension of ASUU’s strike following government intervention, but the union denied ending the strike, asserting the administration lacks such authority.

Kaduna State University (KASU) was thrown into disarray on Thursday following conflicting announcements regarding the status of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU chapter.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, announced at a press briefing that the strike had been suspended and academic activities would resume immediately. He credited this development to Governor Uba Sani’s intervention, which included a N50 million welfare package for staff and the release of N146 million in back pay and allowances tied to the SIWES program.
Describing the move as “an unprecedented act of courage,” Professor Musa praised the governor’s commitment to students, education, and staff welfare. He also revealed that a reconciliation committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, had been set up to negotiate with all university unions.
However, ASUU-KASU quickly refuted the Vice-Chancellor’s statement. In a release signed by Acting Chairman Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi and Secretary Comrade Peter M. Waziri, the union insisted that the strike had not been suspended.
“The university management is not the body that declared the strike and thus lacks the authority to call it off,” the union stated, urging the public to disregard the VC’s announcement.
