Cynthia Falegan, a Nigerian Chemical Engineering graduate, secured fully funded PhD offers from two U.S. universities without a Master’s degree, driven by her passion for sustainable solutions and outstanding academic and research experience.

A remarkable Nigerian scholar, Cynthia Falegan, has made headlines after earning fully funded PhD offers from two prestigious universities in the United States, all without first obtaining a Master’s degree.
Cynthia, a graduate of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Nigeria, completed her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2017 with a Second Class Upper Division. Driven by a passion for research and academic excellence, she set her sights on furthering her studies abroad and applied directly to PhD programs—successfully bypassing the traditional Master’s route.
Her outstanding academic record and hands-on research experience paved the way for multiple PhD offers. Ultimately, she chose to continue her studies in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo, Ohio, where she secured a fully funded scholarship covering her tuition and living expenses for the full five years of her program.
During her time at ABUAD, Cynthia gained invaluable industry experience through internships at top-tier oil and gas companies such as Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Speaking about her decision to specialize in Chemical Engineering at the doctoral level, Cynthia explained that her interest in sustainable development and environmental solutions played a major role.
“I decided to pursue my PhD studies in the United States because of the research foundation I acquired at ABUAD on water and wastewater treatment, as well as my passion for creating sustainable solutions in Nigeria, especially in the Niger Delta region,” she shared.
Cynthia’s inspiring journey is a testament to the power of determination, academic excellence, and the drive to create meaningful change through research.
