FG Warns Tertiary Institutions Against Unauthorized Satellite Campuses

The Federal Government has warned tertiary institutions against establishing unauthorized satellite campuses, mandating prior regulatory approval and threatening strict sanctions for non-compliance to safeguard the quality and integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system.

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to all federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education operating unauthorized satellite campuses, threatening sanctions against institutions found violating regulatory protocols.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Wednesday, raising alarm over the increasing trend of tertiary institutions establishing unapproved satellite campuses without obtaining clearance from their respective oversight bodies—the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

“Many of these newly created campuses lack the academic justification, infrastructure, and strategic planning needed to function effectively,” Alausa stated. He emphasized that the unchecked expansion undermines the quality, integrity, and sustainability of Nigeria’s higher education system.

The minister criticized some Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts for misallocating limited resources to set up substandard campuses instead of improving existing ones. “This is not only counterproductive but detrimental to national education standards,” he added.

As a corrective measure, Alausa has directed all relevant regulatory agencies to inform institutions under their supervision that no satellite campus is to be established without prior written approval from the Minister of Education through the appropriate regulatory channels.

“Non-compliance with this directive will attract serious disciplinary action,” he warned.

The government’s move is part of a broader effort to streamline tertiary education delivery and ensure that academic programmes are executed in environments that meet minimum standards.
