Dr. Daniel Nawose, a former herder from Turkana County, overcame poverty, child labor, and societal challenges to become the first scholar from his community to earn two PhDs, inspiring others with his determination and passion for education.

Dr. Daniel Ing’ollan Nawose, a former herder from Turkana County, has achieved a historic milestone by earning his second PhD, becoming the first scholar from his community to accomplish this feat despite a challenging upbringing marked by poverty, drought, and child labor.
Born in the banditry-prone area of Katilia, Nawose began herding camels and goats at a young age to support his family after his father’s death. A chance encounter in 1980 led him to Katilia Primary School, where he balanced herding and studies, later progressing to Lokitaung Secondary School.
Nawose served in the military for over a decade before resigning in 2004 to pursue education. He completed his undergraduate degree at Moi University in 2007, followed by a master’s degree in 2011, and his first PhD in France in 2018. Driven by his passion for academia, he began a second PhD in Religious Studies Education in 2020.
Despite financial struggles and societal challenges, Nawose’s determination to inspire his community and prove the power of education has made him a role model. Supported by his wife, Rebecca, and celebrated by his family and peers, Nawose hopes his story motivates others to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
