A Senegalese geological engineer, Mouhamadou Bamba Samb, overcame setbacks to secure the fully funded Chevening Scholarship for an MSc in Mining Environmental Management at the University of Exeter, driven by his passion for sustainable mining practices.

Mouhamadou Bamba Samb, a geological engineer from Senegal, overcame significant challenges to secure the prestigious Chevening Scholarship for an MSc in Mining Environmental Management at the University of Exeter. With a deep passion for sustainable mining, he was determined to find solutions to the environmental damage caused by mineral extraction in Africa. His journey to winning the fully funded scholarship was not easy, but his persistence, strategic planning, and dedication to his goals ultimately paid off.
Having earned a degree in Geological Engineering from the National School of Mines and Geology/Earth Science Institute in Senegal, Mouhamadou recognized the harmful effects of mining, especially Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), on the environment. Motivated to drive change, he sought to further his education in mining environmental management. He applied to three UK universities—Exeter, Leeds, and Cardiff—and received unconditional offers from all, but funding remained a challenge. That was when he set his sights on the highly competitive Chevening Scholarship.
Mouhamadou first heard about Chevening from a former scholar, Fatoumata Zahra Diallo, and applied with high hopes. On his first attempt, he was conditionally selected but lost the opportunity because he couldn’t provide an English proficiency test result in time. Undeterred, he improved his preparation, took the IELTS early—scoring a 7.0—and refined his essays with feedback from a scholar. His persistence paid off when he was awarded the scholarship on his next attempt, securing full funding for his studies.
Key factors that made his application stand out included his clear career goals, well-structured leadership and networking essays, and a strong performance in his interview. He also emphasized authenticity in his application, ensuring that his story and motivations were presented in a compelling and genuine manner. By preparing his scholarship application early and demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing mining-related environmental issues, he made himself a strong candidate for the award.
Reflecting on his journey, Mouhamadou encourages future applicants to start early, research scholarship networks, and write compelling essays that showcase their leadership potential and long-term goals. He emphasizes the importance of persistence, advising candidates to refine their applications and reapply if necessary. His story is a testament to resilience, strategic planning, and the power of determination, proving that with the right mindset and preparation, achieving one’s academic and career dreams is possible.
