JAMB officials have clarified the role of Nigeria’s leading education agency, stating that they hold policy meetings to plan and set guidelines for admissions each academic year. The board’s duty is to approve recommended candidates for admission, ensuring compliance with these guidelines by tertiary institutions.
Grace Olima William, JAMB’s state coordinator in Akwa Ibom, emphasized that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a ranking exam. Contrary to common belief, JAMB does not directly offer admission but approves candidates based on institutional recommendations.
At an event with the Association of Heads of Federal Establishments (AHFE) in Akwa Ibom, William highlighted JAMB’s values of service, integrity, transparency, inclusiveness, equity, and zero tolerance for corruption and exam malpractice. The meeting also included presentations from JAMB, NIPOST, and the Public Complaints Commission Nigeria.
Dorothy Udoh, JAMB’s spokesperson in Akwa Ibom, provided an overview of JAMB’s history and mandate. Established in 1978, JAMB places qualified candidates into tertiary institutions based on stipulated guidelines. U
doh advised contacting the SERVICOM unit for more guidance and noted JAMB’s role in conducting third-party exams, including recruitment and promotion exams.
