Lecturer Forces University Students to Kneel Down in Class, Video Causes Him Trouble

Cursory: A video posted on Twitter on Monday, February 6, depicted a scenario where students were instructed to kneel down and raise their hands, reminiscent of primary school disciplinary practices in Nigeria. The footage also showed a lecturer slapping some students and dismissing others from the class.

The administration of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, located in Wudil, Kano state, has taken action by suspending a faculty member following a widely circulated video showing the lecturer disciplining students of the institution.

The lecturer allegedly administered corporal punishment to the students for minor infractions during their ‘Nigerian People and Culture’ class.

In a video shared by Leadership via Twitter on Monday, February 6, students were instructed to kneel down and raise their hands, reminiscent of disciplinary practices in Nigerian primary schools.

Additionally, the lecturer was observed slapping some students and dismissing others from the class. A caption accompanying the video remarked that the university appeared to have regressed to the level of a secondary school, stating: “just wudil don turn to secondary school.”

The Leadership accompanied the video with the caption: “The incident gained widespread attention through a viral video on social media, prompting a Kano-based lawyer, Barr. Abba Hikima, to pen an open letter condemning the actions of the lecturer as barbaric and inhuman.”

Tertiary institutions in Nigeria have been called out for alleged maltreatment of students in the past. Some lecturers have also come under fire for not respecting the rights and privileges of the students.

@adiahnn: This is a concerning issue. It’s important for educators to use constructive and respectful methods for disciplining students. Kudos to Barr. Abba Hikima for speaking out against such actions.

@Adamumu40771311: What does people expect from frustrated and underpaid lecturers, he has many lives challenges, family responsibilities and still government choose to pay him a chicken change.

@martin_webi: And you wonder why such Uni keep producing half-baked graduates? How can such students be true leaders of their life’s or anything else if they are so disrespected and abused? Absolutely disgusting! This lecturer and the likes of him should be sacked.

@SEARUWA_LAW: This also shows the maturity and self confidence level of taday’s university students. You don’t try this in my time.

@R_Oladele97: u remember this hall that year??

@babanjawhir: Dismissal he deserves not transfer.

@Biggyjon: For university?
