Mother and Daughter Graduate Together from Rutgers University, Marking a Historic Milestone

A 43-year-old mother and her 21-year-old daughter made history by graduating together from Rutgers University, overcoming personal and financial challenges, and are now pursuing their Master’s degrees side by side.

In a remarkable celebration of perseverance and family unity, 43-year-old Latonya Johnson and her 21-year-old daughter, Laila Birchett, both graduated from Rutgers University’s School of Social Work on the same day.

Latonya, a divorced mother of six, had long postponed her academic goals due to parenting and work demands. Her college journey, which first began in 1999, was repeatedly interrupted. But in 2022, Laila encouraged her to enroll at Rutgers alongside her.

“I never imagined I’d graduate alongside my daughter,” Latonya shared. “It still feels surreal.”

Laila, who had been working as a drug and alcohol counselor, left her part-time job to focus fully on school. Despite the financial strain and uncertainty, she was determined to finish her degree.

The pair shared one professor and supported each other throughout their studies—from navigating technology challenges to staying motivated during tough times. “Whenever I felt like giving up, I’d look at my mom and say, ‘If she can do it, I can too,’” Laila said.

Latonya praised Rutgers University for its support, especially for nontraditional students. “Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to uplift a returning student,” she said.

Now, their academic journey continues: both mother and daughter have applied to the university’s Master of Social Work program, proving that learning truly has no age limit.
