Inez Phillips Durham and her daughter Jennifer Durham made history by becoming the first parent–child duo to earn PhDs in Psychology from Rutgers University, a milestone achieved through decades of resilience, sacrifice, and shared academic determination.

A mother and her daughter, Inez Phillips Durham and Jennifer Durham, have made history as the first parent–child duo to earn doctoral degrees in Psychology from Rutgers University in the United States.
Their remarkable achievement spans decades and reflects a powerful legacy of resilience, determination, and academic excellence passed from one generation to the next.
A Journey That Began in the 1950s
Inez Durham’s academic journey began in 1953 when, at just 18 years old, she enrolled at Rutgers to study at the New Jersey College for Women, the university’s women’s college at the time. Her experience was far from easy—she was the only Black student in her class and was not assigned a roommate, a decision she understood but refused to let define her.
Rather than giving in to isolation, Inez rose above it, becoming a class leader and eventually serving as class president. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1957 and later completed a master’s degree in social work in 1961.
Perseverance Through Personal Loss
Years later, Inez returned to Rutgers to pursue a doctorate in psychology at the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, completing her PhD in 1984. This milestone came during one of the most challenging periods of her life.
After losing her husband in 1971, she became a single mother, raising Jennifer on her own while working multiple jobs—including psychotherapist, school social worker, and tennis instructor—to support her family and fund her education.
“I did it by the grace of God,” Inez later said, explaining that prayer and determination carried her through years of sacrifice. During this time, Jennifer had to grow up quickly, becoming more independent as her mother balanced work, parenting, and doctoral studies.
Studying Side by Side
Mother and daughter often spent long hours together on campus, studying in the medical science library— Inez working on her dissertation while Jennifer completed her schoolwork nearby. Jennifer later described their bond as a “mother-sister” relationship, forged through shared loss and mutual support.
When Jennifer had time off from school, she accompanied her mother to work, watching her lead and inspire others. “She was my first role model of what a leader was,” Jennifer recalled.
A Legacy Completed
Inspired by her mother’s perseverance, Jennifer followed the same academic path. She enrolled in the same graduate school and earned her own PhD in Psychology from Rutgers in 1992—eight years after her mother’s graduation.
Together, they became the first parent and child to graduate from the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology with doctoral degrees, cementing a historic academic legacy.
Their story stands as a powerful reminder that resilience, faith, and determination can transcend generations—and that education can become a shared family triumph.
