Obafemi Awolowo University Implements Ban on 6AM and 7PM Classes

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has banned classes scheduled at 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in response to student protests about irregular schedules that negatively impact their well-being, reinforcing that official lecture hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and emphasizing the importance of maintaining Lecture Free Week.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has instituted a ban on lecturers scheduling classes at 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in response to student protests regarding inconsistent academic schedules that they believe adversely affect their well-being and welfare.

The university’s administration has reiterated that official lecture hours are set between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Furthermore, it has cautioned against infringements, including holding classes during Lecture Free Week.

In a statement delivered by K. A. Bakare, the Registrar, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the significance of maintaining this period free from lectures and ongoing assessments. “The Vice-Chancellor appreciates the cooperation of both staff and students on these matters,” the statement conveyed.

This directive reflects the students’ concerns regarding various academic scheduling practices. Previously, the Great Ife Students’ Union condemned the implementation of 7:00 a.m. classes, disruptions to the Lecture Free Week, and classes extending past 6:00 p.m., including those held on Saturdays.

“It is essential to remind the university community that these practices are not permitted within OAU, and it’s disheartening to witness such abnormalities becoming routine,” stated the union.

Students expressed that these irregularities hinder their academic balance and overall well-being, urging the administration to take timely action. “Such disruptions compromise the equilibrium between academic responsibilities and other vital aspects of students’ lives, and scheduling lectures during the Lecture Free Week undermines its purpose, denying students the chance to reinforce their learning,” they asserted.

The Students’ Union has called upon both the university administration and the Division of Student Affairs to address these concerns promptly. “We urge the university and the Division of Student Affairs to swiftly tackle these issues,” the union warned, indicating that failure to enforce these regulations might lead to further actions.

“The Great Ife Students’ Union is committed to advocating for policies that prioritize the welfare and academic success of all students. Moving forward, we will not hesitate to take decisive actions to safeguard the rights and interests of our members if normalcy is not restored,” they added.

Students have also been encouraged to report any violations, particularly through their class representatives.
