Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, narrowly escaped an attack by protesting students in Abeokuta, with conflicting reports from the students and security officials about the cause of the confrontation.

Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, narrowly escaped harm on Wednesday after her convoy was reportedly attacked by protesting students in Abeokuta during a demonstration against unresolved academic issues at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY).
The protest, which began at MAPOLY and was set to conclude at the Governor’s office, centered on grievances including delayed results, postponed NYSC mobilization, and increased tuition fees. The institution had previously shut down and dissolved its student union leadership in response to earlier protests.
According to the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Kayode Akinmade, the students, allegedly armed with sticks and other objects, blocked the deputy governor’s convoy, causing damage to vehicles and injuries to security personnel. In response, the convoy rerouted to avoid further confrontation.
However, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun Chairman, Adeyanju Francis, denied the allegations, claiming the students were peaceful until police attached to the convoy fired shots, injuring some protesters. Francis stated, “None of our students attacked her. We were expressing our grievances peacefully when her police began shooting at us.”
The incident highlights growing tensions between the state government and students, with both sides presenting conflicting accounts of the events.
