Polytechnic and college workers in Oyo State have threatened an indefinite strike from February 6, 2025, over the delayed implementation of the approved minimum wage, urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent disruptions.

Workers in polytechnics and colleges of education across Oyo State have announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike starting February 6, 2025, due to the delayed implementation of the approved minimum wage.
Dr. Kola Lawal, Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), made this known in a statement released on Sunday in Ibadan. He criticized the continued delay as a neglect of workers’ welfare, despite the Oyo State government’s efforts to ensure fair remuneration.
Lawal noted that while the state government had increased funding to higher institutions—including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education—to facilitate the implementation of the new wage, the management of these institutions had failed to act accordingly. He pointed out that universities such as LAUTECH and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education had already implemented the new wage for January 2025, yet polytechnic and college workers were left out.
“This failure has worsened workers’ financial struggles, especially amid rising inflation and economic challenges,” the statement read. “It is unacceptable that while other institutions benefit from the new wage, our workers are left behind despite being equally deserving.”
JAC is demanding the immediate implementation of the minimum wage starting from January 2025 and insists that salaries from February onward must reflect the new structure. The group has set a deadline of February 5, 2025, for compliance, warning that failure to meet the demand will result in a total and indefinite withdrawal of services across Oyo State’s polytechnics and colleges of education.
The workers called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to intervene urgently to prevent disruptions in academic activities and uphold workers’ rights.
