University of Ibadan Wins ₦200,000 in Inter-Campus Debate Competition

The University of Ibadan won the eighth Super Bowl Debate Competition, themed “This is Nigeria,” defeating 12 other universities to claim the ₦200,000 grand prize, with participants showcasing leadership and oratory skills on national issues.

The University of Ibadan (UI) clinched victory at the eighth edition of the Super Bowl Debate Competition, held at the institution’s Alumni Hall, earning the grand prize of ₦200,000.

Represented by Chineke Ugochukwu, UI defeated 12 other universities, while Dominican University’s Jacinta Nwachukwu emerged as the first runner-up, and Kolade Daniela of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University secured third place.

Themed “This is Nigeria,” the competition featured 13 institutions from Oyo State and consisted of three stages: a thematic speech, an impromptu pix-prompt session, and a final round addressing “Heroes of Today.” Other participating schools included the Federal School of Survey, Oyo, and the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora.

In his keynote address, Fisayo Soyombo, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, emphasized the importance of values like hard work and dignity of labor in addressing systemic corruption, stating, “The solution to every Nigerian problem lies in the agency created to solve it.”

Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, the convener and Head of the Department of Communication and Language Arts, highlighted the event’s aim to develop leadership and oratory skills among youths. “This platform gives young people the opportunity to voice ideas that can transform Nigeria. We need to engage them on national issues and provide platforms for their perspectives,” she said.
