UNN Denies Evicting Visually Impaired Student from Hostel

The University of Nigeria Nsukka denied claims that Nnamdi Daniel, a visually impaired student, was evicted from the hostel, stating he still resides there and that recent evictions only targeted unauthorized occupants, not him.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it expelled a visually impaired student from its hostel over complaints about poor accommodation conditions.

The allegation suggested that a 300-level student, Nnamdi Daniel, was forced out after posting a viral video highlighting the state of the university’s hostels. However, in a statement released on Friday, the institution described the report as false and misleading.

According to the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, the student in question is still residing in the hostel and has not been evicted. He clarified that the management only recently carried out an exercise to remove unauthorized occupants as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions.

The statement explained that students without proper hostel allocation were given 72 hours to vacate after staying for over two months without payment. It emphasized that this action was unrelated to any media activity or complaints raised by students.

Regarding the visually impaired student, the university noted that although he has not yet paid for his allocated space, he has been allowed to remain in the hostel out of consideration and inclusiveness.

UNN further expressed concern over the spread of inaccurate information, reiterating its commitment to protecting the rights of students with special needs through its anti-discrimination and inclusiveness policies.

The management also highlighted ongoing plans to rehabilitate hostel facilities, including Zik’s Flats, through a public-private partnership arrangement, and urged students, staff, and alumni to remain calm and trust the institution’s efforts to provide a safe and conducive environment for all.
