UTME 2025: JAMB Explains Exam Is Not Internet-Dependent

JAMB has clarified that the 2025 UTME is conducted using a secure Local Area Network (LAN), not the internet, and reiterated that a National Identification Number (NIN) is required for registration, with strict guidelines for correcting personal data.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is not conducted over the internet, but rather through a Local Area Network (LAN) system.

This clarification was made by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, during a visit from the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) at the JAMB headquarters in Bwari on February 25, 2025.

Prof. Oloyede addressed ongoing misconceptions that UTME relies on internet connectivity, which has led to worries about possible technical issues during the 2025 exams.

According to him, “The Board uses Local Area Network (LAN), which is a private network connecting computers within a specific area like a campus or building. It operates independently, using its own secure protocols, and does not depend on the internet.”

He further explained that LAN technology allows secure data distribution to candidates’ computer systems. Before the exam begins, all necessary data is encrypted and protected with extra security measures to ensure smooth and safe operations during the test.

Speaking on JAMB’s partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Prof. Oloyede confirmed that having a National Identification Number (NIN) is still mandatory for UTME registration.

He also addressed questions about updating personal details, noting that changes to data from NIMC must be valid and clearly justified.

“Corrections are only made when absolutely necessary and must include proper documentation to maintain the system’s integrity,” he said.

To fix any discrepancies, Prof. Oloyede encouraged candidates to use the “REQUERY” option on the JAMB portal instead of trying to delete or alter records.

Additionally, he reminded the public that UTME registration is entirely separate from other school-based exams such as those organized by WAEC and NECO, urging everyone to follow the correct procedures.
