World Innovators University (WIU) awarded honorary doctorate degrees to seven Nigerians and one Ghanaian in recognition of their outstanding contributions to innovation, leadership, and societal development across sectors such as education, cybersecurity, business, and finance.
In a landmark event celebrating transformative leadership and excellence, World Innovators University (WIU), based in India, conferred honorary doctorate degrees on eight exceptional Africans—seven from Nigeria and one from Ghana. The prestigious ceremony was held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos and brought together educators, professionals, innovators, and dignitaries from across the continent.
The recognition was awarded to individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions in various sectors including technology, business, education, finance, and public service. According to WIU, the honourees embody the spirit of innovation, integrity, and visionary leadership that the university seeks to promote globally.

Honourees Celebrated for Impact and Excellence
The award recipients include:
- Prof. Christian Harrison – A renowned academic, Harrison serves as Professor of Leadership and Enterprise at the University of Greater Manchester. His research and mentorship have shaped emerging leaders across continents.
- Mrs. Adesomoju Opeyemi – A dynamic entrepreneur and business strategist, Opeyemi is recognized for empowering women through enterprise and for her innovations in sustainable business practices.
- Victor Edem – A trailblazer in cybersecurity, Edem’s work in digital infrastructure and data protection has advanced Nigeria’s national cyber capabilities.
- Michael Obi – With decades in the banking sector, Obi is celebrated for his leadership in financial services and commitment to ethical banking practices.
- Ogheneochuko Ahwi – A seasoned chartered accountant, Ahwi has been instrumental in developing transparent financial systems in both public and private institutions.
- Harrison Tettehfio – A Ghanaian cybersecurity consultant, Tettehfio’s contributions have strengthened digital resilience across West Africa.
- Rasheed Saliu – Recognized for his contributions to community development and youth empowerment, Saliu has championed grassroots initiatives that create opportunities in underserved regions.
- Dr. Ayodele Adetuyi – An educator and academic administrator, Dr. Adetuyi has dedicated his career to improving access to quality education in Nigeria, especially in rural communities.
A Celebration of Purpose and Legacy
Speaking during the ceremony, WIU Chancellor, Prof. Gangadhar Joshi, described the honorary degrees as a tribute to individuals who exemplify courage, creativity, and the power of ideas. “These men and women are not only achievers but visionaries who have turned challenges into stepping stones for growth and impact,” he said.
According to Joshi, the university’s selection committee employed a rigorous evaluation process, considering contributions to knowledge, leadership, social innovation, ethical standards, and global influence.
“These awards are not simply honorary in title—they are acknowledgements of legacies being written in real time,” Joshi noted. “Each recipient has shown what it means to lead with vision and act with integrity in service of humanity.”
Championing Innovation Through Education
WIU, known for its forward-thinking approach to higher education, is positioned as a global institution committed to knowledge creation, inclusive learning, and sustainable development. Its mission is rooted in equipping change-makers with the tools and mindset needed to solve pressing global challenges.
Prof. Ashok Gupta, the university’s Provost, highlighted WIU’s emphasis on innovation-driven education. He explained that the university encourages interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving, preparing students to think critically and work collaboratively in a fast-changing world.
Registrar Prof. Catalino Mendoza detailed the institution’s unique academic structure, which includes:
- Bachelor of Innovation
- Master of Innovation
- Doctor of Innovation
“These qualifications go beyond traditional academic models,” Mendoza said. “They integrate mentorship, real-world problem solving, and hands-on industry experience—ensuring our graduates are not just informed, but empowered.”
The honourees expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, with many pledging to continue advancing initiatives that improve lives and uplift communities. The event concluded with a call to action for all present to embrace innovation not as a concept, but as a way of life.
