At just 14, Zainab Akintola has earned 30 certifications in software engineering, AI, and machine learning after being denied university admission due to age restrictions, and she now plans to merge her tech expertise with medicine

A 14-year-old Nigerian prodigy, Zainab Akintola, has defied expectations by earning 30 certifications in software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning—all before qualifying for university admission.
Zainab’s childhood dream was to become a doctor, inspired by her father, who encouraged her to pursue medicine to address the need for more Muslim female doctors in Nigeria. Her academic journey was accelerated, allowing her to complete secondary school at 12.
In 2023, she sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and scored an impressive 262, qualifying her for a medicine program. However, she was devastated to learn that Nigeria’s minimum university admission age is 16, making her ineligible for enrollment.
Instead of letting this setback discourage her, Zainab’s father introduced her to software engineering, explaining how AI is transforming healthcare. This new path excited her, and she quickly immersed herself in tech.
She enrolled in top programs, including:
• ALX Software Engineering Program – Front-End Development
• Techvinson Academy – Back-End Software Engineering
• KemonAI – AI & Machine Learning Specialization
• Udemy, RITA Africa, SheCodes, and GreatLearning – Courses in Web Development, AI, and Machine Learning
Through these platforms, she mastered programming languages such as C, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, and Python, along with frameworks like React and Bootstrap.
Innovative Tech Projects
To apply her knowledge, Zainab developed several innovative projects, including:
• E-commerce website
• Real estate app
• Personal portfolio website
• AI chatbots for schools and law firms
• Poem generator and quote generator
These projects enhanced her problem-solving and creative thinking skills, solidifying her expertise in tech.
Despite her achievements in technology, Zainab remains passionate about medicine. She envisions a future where she can merge AI with medical innovation.
With two years left before she can attend university, she plans to:
• Conduct more research
• Work on advanced projects
• Explore scholarship opportunities abroad
Zainab hopes her journey inspires young people to stay resilient and embrace unexpected opportunities.
“Look for other possibilities and continue to learn. Often, the path you didn’t expect can lead to the greatest rewards,” she advises.
