17-Year-Old Student Earns University Degree Before Graduating from High School

NeeAli Scott, a 17-year-old senior at Savannah Arts Academy, achieved the remarkable feat of earning a college degree before receiving her high school diploma.

NeeAli Scott, a 17-year-old senior at Savannah Arts Academy, achieved the remarkable feat of earning a college degree before receiving her high school diploma.

Scott didn’t let the fact that she hadn’t graduated from high school stop her from pursuing higher education. Recently, she earned an associate of science degree from Savannah State University nearly a month before her high school graduation.

Scott graduated from Savannah Arts Academy on Monday, May 20, after having already celebrated her college graduation.

Looking ahead, Scott has yet to decide where she will continue her education. However, she expressed a strong preference for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She plans to study to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

“I would like to work in an inner-city hospital and give back to the youth here in Savannah or wherever I may end up,” Scott said.

Reflecting on her decision to pursue a college degree early, Scott explained, “I really just wanted to get as much education, a college education, as I can now for free. In the state of Georgia, you get 30 credits free, so that’s already half of the associate’s degree.”

While some college-level courses posed more challenges than others, Scott persevered and succeeded.

Scott’s mother, Sabriya Scott, proudly celebrated her daughter’s academic achievements on Instagram, writing, “Today my baby did her BIG one!! She’s OFFICIALLY a Savannah State University Graduate at 17 years old. She just graduated from college before graduating from high school.”

Sabriya Scott recounted the obstacles her daughter faced as a 2-pound micro-preemie and expressed her gratitude for how far NeeAli has come: “I didn’t let all the odds that were stacked against my 2lb micro-preemie affect how I knew my GOD would work in her life. GOD DID just that and today NeeAli graduated from SSU with her Associate of Science Degree! Congratulations NeeAli Scott for being an amazing kid!! We ❤️ you!”

She also thanked everyone who supported NeeAli, concluding, “Big thanks to my entire village and everyone that celebrated this milestone with her. ❤️”
