Cursory: Aya Osman, an 18-year-old cancer survivor from Florida, graduated Summa Cum Laude from high school and received a full scholarship to study biology at NYU. Despite her cancer diagnosis and rigorous treatment, she remained focused on her dream of becoming a neurologist.

Despite facing a challenging battle with cancer for the past two years, Aya Osman, an 18-year-old African American student from Orange Park, Florida, has achieved the remarkable accomplishment of graduating Summa Cum Laude from high school. Adding to her achievements, she has been granted a full scholarship to attend NYU.
From the young age of 12, Osman has nurtured a profound passion for neurology and aspires to become a neurologist. Although her cancer diagnosis initially posed a threat to her dreams, she chose not to dwell excessively on the future, instead adopting a step-by-step approach to life, focusing on the present moment.
To eliminate the tumor in her arm, Osman underwent an aggressive treatment regimen consisting of six months of chemotherapy sessions, scheduled every three weeks, with each session followed by a three-day hospital stay.
Despite the demanding treatment, she demonstrated tremendous resilience and refused to allow cancer to dictate her life. Engaging herself in schoolwork and other activities, she filled her days with purpose and determination.
“It helped to distract yourself, and no matter what it may be, whether it was piano or schoolwork,” Osman told Clay Today.
“It definitely helps curb the side effects of such a great diagnosis. It helps keep put your mind at ease and keeps you focused about something else.”
Throughout her treatment, her mother brought her a laptop to the hospital, ensuring she could keep up with her studies. She diligently maintained her International Baccalaureate schedule while doctors monitored her progress.
“I did everything on my laptop,” Aya said. “So you know, I was laying down on my hospital bed and the nurses would come in checking heart rate, checking my temperature and whatnot. While I would be rushing to finish an essay for IB history or English or having the distraction of schoolwork, to be able to focus on something else really helped.”
Aya’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts yielded remarkable results as she graduated with the highest honors, Summa Cum Laude, from Ridgeview High School, boasting an impressive GPA of 4.77.
Furthermore, her exceptional achievements and perseverance caught the attention of the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, a charitable organization committed to providing financial and emotional support to children battling cancer.
With their assistance, Aya was granted a scholarship to pursue her higher education at New York University. Now cancer-free and two years into remission, she is eagerly preparing to embark on her academic journey at NYU, where she plans to pursue a major in biology, thanks to the scholarship she has been awarded.
