The Anambra State government has warned that it will shut down around 2,000 unaccredited schools if they do not obtain the necessary approvals before the new school term begins on September 17, emphasizing the need for all schools to meet educational standards set by the Ministry of Education.

As primary and secondary schools in Anambra State prepare to resume for the first term on September 17, the state government has issued a warning to approximately 2,000 schools operating without proper accreditation. The government has threatened to shut down any unaccredited institutions that do not secure the required approvals.
In a press release on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, announced that these unapproved schools were identified during a recent evaluation of accredited institutions across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Nwosu highlighted that schools lacking proper accreditation are failing to meet the standards set by the Ministry of Education, which could negatively impact the quality of education for students.
“All children in Anambra, regardless of their location, deserve access to quality learning environments, skilled teachers, and a proper curriculum,” Nwosu stated.
He continued, “The government of Anambra State is concerned that about 2,000 unaccredited or unapproved schools are operating across the 21 local government areas. This is unacceptable, especially considering the priority that Governor Chukwuma Soludo, a first-class academic himself, has placed on quality education. Operating a school without the requisite accreditation and approval indicates non-compliance with the government’s standards.”
The government has ordered the affected schools to immediately apply for accreditation and registration with the Anambra State Ministry of Education. These schools have been instructed to comply before the resumption date to avoid closure and other severe penalties.
Additionally, Nwosu mentioned that the list of accredited schools will be distributed to Local Government Education Departments through the Transition Committee Chairmen for easy access.
