Nyasia Jordan became the first Black valedictorian in Springfield Central High School’s 32-year history and earned a $288,000 scholarship to Harvard University, despite overcoming significant financial and personal challenges.

Nyasia Jordan, an 18-year-old from Springfield, Massachusetts, made history as the first Black valedictorian in Springfield Central High School’s 32-year history, earning a $288,000 scholarship to Harvard University.
Jordan achieved this remarkable feat with a 1,310 SAT score and a 4.47 GPA. Despite facing financial challenges, moving between four different homes, and attending multiple schools, her dedication paid off as she secured an annual $72,000 scholarship to pursue studies in Chemistry or Neurobiology.
Raised in a financially unstable household, where her father worked as a landscaper and the family relied on government assistance, Jordan faced hardships, including the loss of her father. After his death, she became more involved in school activities, including the National Math and Honor Societies, the Gender Equality Club, and managing three varsity teams.
Though she experienced bullying for her love of academics, Jordan remained focused, realizing her potential beyond stereotypes. She now looks forward to her future at Harvard, aspiring to contribute to the medical field through research.
