Anita Okunde, a 20-year-old Nigerian student at the University of Oxford, has made history as the first Black woman elected President of the prestigious Oxford Union.
Currently studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Anita is an award-winning activist, public speaker, and advocate for intersectional climate justice and feminism. She expressed her gratitude and excitement on social media, attributing her success to her faith and quoting John 15:7: “All the glory be to God honestly.”
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), she celebrated her groundbreaking achievement, stating:
“First EVER Black woman elected as Oxford Union President & a proud state school President, built not bought, a dying breed! It has been an honour, and I cannot wait to serve as your president.”
Anita’s vision for the Oxford Union emphasizes inclusivity, representation, and support for marginalized communities. In an interview with Cherwell, she highlighted plans to address underrepresentation in leadership, improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and strengthen the Union’s financial position to make it more welcoming for students from diverse backgrounds.
Her leadership track record includes serving as Treasurer, Director of Media, Socioeconomic Officer, and an elected member of the Secretary’s Committee at the Oxford Union. In the recent election for Trinity Term 2024, Anita secured 564 first-preference votes, narrowly defeating Siddhant Nagrath by 44 votes.
Beyond Oxford, Anita’s achievements are remarkable. Recognized by Forbes as one of the top 100 environmentalists, she has championed sustainability and youth empowerment. She also served as a Youth Commissioner for the Well-being of Future Generations Bill in the UK Parliament.
Anita credits her father, who used Oxford Union debates to improve his English, as a source of personal inspiration. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked on the profound pride she feels in contributing to the institution that holds such significance in her family.
Her historic win underscores her dedication to fostering change and empowering underrepresented voices, both within and beyond the walls of the Oxford Union.
