With 2,030,627 candidates registered for the 2025 UTME, the competition for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions is tougher than ever. Unfortunately, most will not gain admission due to limited slots, strict requirements, and intense competition. Here’s why.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially closed registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with a total of 2,030,627 candidates successfully completing their registration before the deadline on March 8, 2025. These candidates will sit for the UTME, which is scheduled to commence on April 25, 2025.
Additionally, 200,115 candidates registered for the optional mock UTME, set for April 5, 2025, while 630 candidates also signed up for a trial mock on the same date. With registration closed, JAMB has intensified preparations to ensure a smooth and credible examination process.
However, despite this massive number of applicants, history has shown that most of these candidates will not secure admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education.
The reasons vary—ranging from limited admission slots, poor UTME scores, failure to meet institution-specific requirements, and stiff competition for highly sought-after courses.
Nigerian tertiary institutions collectively offer less than 700,000 admission slots yearly, meaning that over 1.3 million candidates may not gain admission.
This highlights the need for candidates to not only prepare thoroughly for the exam but also strategically select their institutions and courses to increase their chances of securing admission.
To curb malpractices and improve the credibility of the examination, JAMB has introduced new security measures, which have already led to the arrest of several candidates attempting to use forged A-level results for admission. Candidates are therefore urged to follow the rules and avoid any fraudulent activities, as JAMB continues to tighten its grip on examination malpractice.
With admission chances so slim, candidates must approach the process wisely—choosing less competitive courses, meeting all admission requirements, and performing excellently in both the UTME and post-UTME screenings where applicable.
Success in the UTME is just the first step; securing admission is the real challenge.
