Former FUOYE SUG president James Adio said Tiwa Savage’s resilience after her leaked private video inspired him to overcome his own scandal, while support from his family and students helped him move forward despite the controversies.

Former Students’ Union Government President of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio, has said Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage inspired him to remain strong after an explicit video allegedly involving him surfaced online.
Speaking during an interview with Tiamiyu Adebayo TV, Adio explained that he drew courage from the way Tiwa Savage handled a similar controversy following the leak of her private video in 2021. According to him, seeing the singer recover from the public backlash convinced him that he could also move past the incident.
Adio said he refused to allow the controversy to destroy his future, stressing that he had worked too hard to give up because of a mistake or public criticism.
He recalled that he was initially unaware of the reactions on social media until he later checked his phone. After reading comments about the leaked video, he realised many people were watching to see how he would respond. Rather than lose hope, he decided to remain focused because he believed those who had supported him deserved better.
The former student leader also acknowledged the overwhelming support he received from many current and former students, saying their encouragement reminded him of the positive impact he made during his time in office.
Reflecting on his emergence as FUOYE SUG president, Adio described the election as one of the toughest moments of his life, revealing that he defeated 13 other contestants to secure victory. He noted that the experience taught him that leadership comes with criticism and that many people hope to see successful individuals fail.
According to him, his administration worked to protect students’ interests, and the goodwill he earned while in office became evident after the scandal, as many students publicly defended him.
Adio also credited his family, especially his mother, for helping him overcome the difficult period. He admitted that he feared his family would reject him after the video surfaced, but their continued love and support gave him the confidence to move forward.
The former SUG president had earlier been suspended by FUOYE over allegations that about ₦700,000 collected as unauthorised levies from newly admitted students was traced to his account. Shortly after the suspension, an explicit video allegedly involving him appeared on social media, attracting widespread attention and prompting investigations.
Following the incident, the university suspended two students over allegations of cyberbullying and blackmail connected to the circulation of the video.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Adio has completed his academic programme and officially signed out of the university.
