A recipient of the prestigious Lebron James Scholarship becomes first beneficiary of the scholarship scheme to earn a bachelor’s degree.
A 21-year-old recipient of the prestigious LeBron James scholarship has graduated, marking a milestone as the first beneficiary to earn a bachelor’s degree.
In 2018, American basketball star LeBron James launched the ‘I Promise School’ to provide educational opportunities to at-risk children and their families in Northeast Ohio. As part of this initiative, 193 students from the inaugural class received four years of free tuition at Kent State University, along with one year of fully paid room and board, according to CNN.

Among these students was Anthony, who took full advantage of the opportunity. He graduated early with a Bachelor of Arts in criminology and justice studies, with a minor in sociology.
LeBron James congratulated Anthony on Instagram, celebrating his achievement as the first ‘I Promise School’ student to earn a bachelor’s degree. “CONGRATULATIONS ANTHONY!!!! SO PROUD OF YOU YOUNG prince,” he wrote.
Reflecting on his journey, Anthony expressed gratitude for the support from the LeBron James Family Foundation. “If it wasn’t for the LeBron James Family Foundation, I don’t know if I would have gone to college, I don’t know where I would be,” he said. He emphasized the impact of living on campus, meeting new people, developing relationships, and joining organizations at Kent State.
Anthony highlighted the financial assistance he received, which covered tuition and books, and facilitated access to additional scholarships and internships. “These programs made the campus a lot easier to navigate,” he noted.
