Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, celebrated its 18th convocation ceremony, during which 29 students graduated with first-class honors for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, in his speech at the convocation on Friday, outlined the achievements during his tenure, as he prepares to step down. He noted that the ceremony marked the completion of academic journeys for all graduands under his leadership.
Esimone detailed the breakdown of the graduates: 7,091 received first degrees, 96 earned postgraduate diplomas, 391 obtained master’s degrees, and 251 were awarded doctorate degrees. He emphasized that 23 of the first degree recipients achieved Second Class honors.
Reflecting on his time in office since the 14th convocation in March 2020, Esimone highlighted his vision to elevate the university to the best in Nigeria and among the top ten in Africa. This goal was pursued through a strategy focusing on academic excellence, community service, administrative reforms, discipline, and advancements.
“At this 18th convocation, my last as Vice-Chancellor, I find it fitting to summarize my tenure. On June 2, 2024, a book detailing my administration, ‘Nnamdi Azikiwe University: The Vice-Chancellorship of Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, FAS, FPSN, 2019 – 2024,’ will be released. This address serves as a preview of that book,” Esimone stated.
He praised the contributions of the university’s community, including the governing council, staff unions, individual staff members, the Students’ Union Government, and various government agencies, acknowledging their roles in the university’s accomplishments.
Esimone expressed fulfillment with his tenure, citing improvements in academics, research, morals, and discipline. He mentioned successfully attracting projects worth N60 billion to the university and implementing disciplinary measures that enhanced the conduct of both students and staff.
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) received commendation for its support, which helped improve the university’s teaching and learning infrastructure.
Chancellor of the university, His Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba, praised Esimone for his effective leadership and expressed hope that his successor would continue his positive work.
During the ceremony, honorary degrees were awarded to several distinguished individuals, including former Kano State Governor Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe.
