Despite being visually impaired and balancing family, work, and studies, William Mapfumo from Zimbabwe became the best graduating student at Zimbabwe Open University, crediting his success to hard work and his wife’s support.

A 43-year-old man named William Mapfumo from Masvingo, Zimbabwe, emerged as the best graduating student at Zimbabwe Open University, beating 2,119 classmates despite being visually impaired. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Communication Studies.
William received his study materials in print, not Braille, because he was the only blind student in a class dominated by able-bodied learners. He had previously earned seven Ordinary Level subjects at Kapota School for the Blind and 10 points at Advanced Level from Pakame High School.
After obtaining a diploma in education, William worked as a teacher while pursuing his bachelor’s degree. He credited his success largely to his wife, Finance Makota, who read his notes aloud, recorded them, and helped convert them into Braille.
Balancing work, university, and family was challenging. William has four school-going children and had to divide his attention between his job, studies, and family. Despite the difficulties, he graduated top of his class, demonstrating that hard work and support can overcome disability.
His message to others with disabilities is that nothing can stop them from achieving greatness if they work hard.
