500-level Covenant University student dies during football training

A 500-level student of Covenant University died after collapsing during football training on campus, with the school attributing the incident to a possible underlying heart condition despite prompt medical intervention.

A 500-level student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.

The incident happened on Monday and has sparked concerns about student health monitoring and emergency response systems in higher institutions. According to the university, the student had been actively participating in training before stepping aside due to leg pain and fatigue.

Shortly after leaving the field, his teammates noticed he was struggling to breathe, which led to an immediate emergency response. He was quickly taken to the university’s medical centre, located near the training ground, where medical staff attempted to revive him using CPR and an automated external defibrillator.

Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the late student as hardworking and energetic, adding that his death is a huge loss to the university community.

Preliminary reports suggest that an undisclosed heart condition may have caused the incident. The university also stated that there was no negligence from its medical team, as all necessary emergency procedures and equipment were properly used.

The institution added that its management has remained in contact with the student’s family and continues to offer support, while expressing deep condolences over the loss, which has left the campus community in mourning.
