At 71, Kwesi Baiden inspires many by returning to high school to pursue his educational dreams, overcoming financial challenges and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 71-year-old man named Kwesi Baiden has become a source of inspiration after returning to high school decades after dropping out, determined to pursue his educational dreams.
Kwesi, one of the candidates registered for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Ahafoman Senior High School in Ahafo, Ghana, went viral for his resilience and determination to take the exam despite his age.
The father of four shared with an online journalist that financial difficulties prevented him from attending school as a child and earning a certificate. However, he never lost sight of his dream.
At 65, Kwesi initially enrolled in high school but had to drop out in Junior High School (JHS) 2 due to financial challenges. Although he planned to return the following year, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans.
Undeterred, Kwesi eventually re-enrolled and is now preparing for a university entrance exam. He emphasized that he persisted because he understood the importance of education. Despite sitting in class with students young enough to be his grandchildren, Kwesi’s determination to fulfill his dream never wavered.
Kwesi hopes to acquire vocational skills in Senior High School and possibly continue to tertiary education. Though not seeking a corporate job, as he’s already past retirement age, Kwesi believes his newfound knowledge will open new doors. “I want to show that it’s never too late to pursue your educational dreams,” he said.
