75-year-old Nigerian King Earns PhD, Aspires to Become A University Lecture

The Olu of Imasayi, Oba Lukman Adeleke Kuoye, who was among the 11,195 graduates at Lagos State University’s 27th convocation, earning a PhD in Social Work has detailed his journey and his aspiration to pursue an academic career in an interview with Punch.

The Olu of Imasayi, Oba Lukman Adeleke Kuoye, was among the 11,195 graduates at Lagos State University’s 27th convocation, earning a PhD in Social Work. In an interview with OLUFEMI ADEDIRAN, he discusses his journey and future aspirations.

Oba Kuoye attributes his success to focus, endurance, and perseverance. Despite his responsibilities as a traditional ruler, he was motivated by a lifelong vision of becoming a renowned scholar. This vision, he says, has been a driving force since his childhood 57 years ago.

The monarch faced significant challenges during his academic journey, the most frustrating being the poor road network between Imasayi and LASU, which sometimes delayed his return home until midnight. Balancing academic pursuits with his duties at the palace also proved difficult. However, he managed these hurdles through focus and effective time management, often applying the ‘scale of preference’ from his economics classes to prioritize tasks.

With his PhD, Oba Kuoye plans to pursue a career in lecturing or consultancy. As a registered social worker, his thesis examined the social support services available to people with mental disorders in Ogun State. He highlighted the rising issues of drug abuse and depression, advocating for government support and stringent laws to address these challenges.

The monarch aims to inspire his subjects by demonstrating that there are no barriers to education. He emphasizes the importance of education in guiding individuals forward, even in the absence of immediate job opportunities.

Oba Kuoye maintained a humble approach during his studies, rejecting preferential treatment and relating to others as a student. His dedication earned him respect from both lecturers and colleagues. He carefully selected a disciplined supervisor who provided the necessary guidance and corrections.

His family was supportive of his decision to return to school, understanding his passion for education. A notable experience during his PhD journey was the department’s controversy over his choice of supervisor, which was ultimately resolved.

Oba Kuoye acknowledges improvements in the educational status of Yewa youths and advocates for a holistic approach to further address educational challenges. He encourages youths to focus on education to prepare for future challenges and urges the government to prioritize educational support, including scholarships for deserving students.

The monarch never planned to become a traditional ruler but accepted the role due to his royal lineage. Despite initial opposition from his family and religious community, he remained steadfast, rejecting any requirement to join a cult.

Oba Kuoye aims to leave a lasting legacy, striving to set a high standard for future generations. He cherishes the day he was officially installed by the Ogun State Governor as a significant milestone in his life.
