Amari Shepherd, a 17-year-old valedictorian with a 4.62 GPA from Frederick A. Douglass High School, received $9.2 million in scholarship offers from 162 U.S. universities and will attend Spelman College on a full-ride scholarship.

Amari Shepherd, a 17-year-old student, has been named the valedictorian of Frederick A. Douglass High School in New Orleans, with an impressive 4.62 GPA.
Her exceptional academic performance earned her $9.2 million in scholarship offers from 162 universities and colleges across the United States.
Amari’s achievements extend beyond her high school diploma; she also earned an associate degree from Bard Early College.
To secure these scholarships, she sent her credentials, including the publication of her book titled “Thirteen,” to every college or university that waived the application fee. Additionally, she used Niche, an online portal offering direct admissions to qualified students, to maximize her opportunities.
Despite being waitlisted by an Ivy League school, Amari decided to attend Spelman College, her dream school, where she was awarded a full-ride scholarship.
Reflecting on her success, Amari quoted her mother’s advice: “My mom always told me to play my role and everything else would fall into place, and that’s exactly what happened.
They also gave me a full ride, so I’ll be going to my dream school for free. “Amari plans to pursue a degree in Political Science, with aspirations of attending law school and eventually joining the Supreme Court.
She is driven by a desire to create a more just and equitable society, a passion inspired by her late father and grandparents, whom she lost to COVID-19.
In their memory, Amari dedicated herself to her education, stating, “Education meant everything to them, so I didn’t really have a choice but to do well in school. It made me feel like everything I do moving forward is bigger than just me.”
