A group of 12-year-old Nigerian girls created an app called ‘AgriConnect’ to address food insecurity by connecting farmers, landowners, and investors, earning them recognition in the 2024 Technovation Girls competition.
A group of innovative pre-teen girls is gaining widespread attention for developing an app aimed at tackling food insecurity in Nigeria.
The team, composed of 12-year-olds Goodness Nwonanne-Chima and Tiffany Tejiri Oghenemaro, alongside 11-year-olds Excel Kiisibari Barile-Nwika and Salome Obehiremen Akhabhau, created an app called ‘AgriConnect.’
These young talents, popularly known as the ‘Smarties,’ designed the app to connect farmers, landowners, and investors, pooling their resources to address food insecurity and boost local food production in Nigeria.
The girls explained that their invention supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2, which seeks to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.
The AgriConnect app allows landowners who lack farming expertise to link up with skilled farmers who may not have land or funding. Additionally, the app helps connect these partnerships with investors interested in financing agricultural projects.
Salome, one of the team members, described how the app works: “The investor provides the funds, the farmer brings the skills and knowledge, and the landowner offers the land. Together, they all share in the profits according to their agreement.”
This groundbreaking project earned the girls a spot as finalists in the Beginner Division of the 2024 Technovation Girls competition, which encourages young girls worldwide to leverage technology to solve environmental issues. The competition features special awards in areas like education, agriculture, and climate change.
While teams from China and Poland won awards for climate change and education, respectively, these Nigerian girls took home the Combat Hunger Award for their agricultural innovation. Their success places them among 15 global winners who will receive further training in California, USA, where they will compete against other teams later this year.
