A Kwara Polytechnic lecturer was suspended after a viral video showed him flogging kneeling IJMB examination candidates, sparking public outrage and an official investigation.

A video showing a lecturer at Kwara State Polytechnic flogging students who were kneeling during an examination has triggered widespread criticism across Nigeria. The incident, which reportedly occurred on June 22, 2026, raised concerns about students’ rights, professionalism, and the use of corporal punishment in higher institutions.
The footage showed several students being ordered to kneel and then caned by the lecturer while others watched. Many students and members of the public condemned the action, describing it as humiliating and inappropriate.
A student who spoke anonymously said such treatment of students is not uncommon on campus and argued that proper disciplinary procedures should be used instead of public punishment. He also linked the incident to previous complaints about student welfare at the institution.
However, a staff member defended the lecturer, explaining that the students were candidates in an Interim Joint Matriculation Board examination who had repeatedly arrived late despite warnings. According to him, officials were under pressure to maintain order and ensure examination rules were followed. He described the lecturer’s actions as an attempt to help the students rather than harm them.
Following the public backlash, the Polytechnic clarified that those involved were IJMB candidates, not regular Polytechnic students. The school stated that physical punishment has no place in its disciplinary system and emphasized that discipline should be based on respect, understanding, and constructive guidance.
The institution has suspended the lecturer pending the outcome of an investigation and promised a thorough review of the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
