A Nigerian Muslim father said he withdrew his daughter from an Islamic school after she was allegedly taught that kneeling to greet parents is sinful, sparking debate over the balance between religious teachings and Yoruba cultural values.

A Nigerian father has sparked debate online after revealing why he withdrew his daughter from an Islamic school.
According to him, he became worried when his daughter returned home from school and no longer greeted him and her mother in the respectful manner she had been taught. When he questioned her, she allegedly said her teacher had told the class that kneeling to greet parents was sinful and could lead to punishment in the afterlife.
Concerned by the statement, the father said he visited the school to seek clarification from the teacher. However, he claimed the teacher maintained that the teaching was based on religious beliefs.
The man explained that, although he is a Muslim, he is also proud of his Yoruba heritage and believes that showing respect to elders through traditional greetings is an important cultural value. He argued that religion should not erase positive cultural practices that encourage respect, discipline, and good character.
His comments have generated mixed reactions on social media. While some people supported his decision and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions, others argued that religious teachings and cultural practices should be treated as separate issues.
