Alexandra Bastiany made history as Canada’s first Black female interventional cardiologist, overcoming racial challenges throughout her 15-year journey and advocating for culturally sensitive care and inclusion in medicine.
Alexandra Bastiany, born to Haitian parents in Montreal, has set a record as the first Black woman interventional cardiologist in Canada.
Originally aspiring to be a general surgeon, Alexandra discovered her passion for interventional cardiology during her first year of medical school, drawn to its non-invasive techniques for treating heart blockages.
Her 15-year journey, including studies at the University of Montreal and a fellowship at the University of Alberta, was marked by challenges, including racial discrimination and discouragement from mentors.
Despite these obstacles, she persisted with the support of mentors and her determination to defy stereotypes, becoming an advocate for culturally sensitive care and raising awareness of racial bias in medicine.
To inspire future Black women in healthcare, Alexandra advises: “You belong here. Never tone yourself down. Spread your wings and stand tall, because you deserve to be where you are.”
