Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) secured first place in the Innovative Tertiary Institution category at the Solution Innovation District competition, showcasing groundbreaking projects and affirming its leadership in research, innovation, and creativity.


Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, emerged as the winner of the Innovative Tertiary Institution category at the Solution Innovation District (SID) competition, organized by the Anambra State government. The university outperformed other institutions, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), and Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, at the event held at the International Convention Center (ICC), Awka.
Congratulating the team, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, lauded the victory as evidence of the university’s innovative strength and creativity. “UNIZIK has been making headlines for various reasons, including leadership changes. Today, we proudly showcase that UNIZIK is also a hub of research excellence, with academics demonstrating their expertise,” he stated.
UNIZIK excelled across multiple categories, securing first and second positions in the research category. In the student category, UNIZIK students dominated, taking the top three positions, further affirming the institution’s leadership in innovation and skills development.
Leader of the winning team, Prof. Nkiru Meludu, highlighted the innovative projects that secured victory, including:
• Triple Power Supply IoT-Based Smart Home Automation System
• Herbal Tea
• Orange-Flowered Potatoes Used as Flour and Semovita
Future Collaborations
Prof. Ikechebelu emphasized the university’s readiness to collaborate with industry leaders to commercialize its research innovations. “Our agricultural department is developing a farmers’ market that will soon be operational. We aim to ensure that these research designs are not only solutions to societal problems but also commercially viable,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed appreciation to the state government and the university’s research team for their efforts, pledging ongoing support to foster further advancements in innovation.
The event was attended by key UNIZIK representatives, including Prof. Azubike Ekpunobi, Director of Research and Innovation Directorate; Prof. Ifeoma Dunu, Director of UNIZIK FM; and Acting Public Relations Officer, Njelita Louis, among others.
UNIZIK’s triumph at the SID competition solidifies its reputation as a leading institution in innovation, research, and creativity.
