Segun Olayinka, inspired by the stories of Gani Fawehinmi and driven by faith, determination, and a desire to overcome financial and personal challenges, graduated with a 4.79 CGPA in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University, earning numerous awards and inspiring others through his journey of resilience and academic excellence.

Segun Olayinka, the son of a cocoa farmer from Ile-Ife, Osun State, defied numerous odds to graduate with a 4.79 CGPA in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). His story reflects a journey of determination, faith, and resilience as he shared with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI insights into his academic success, humble beginnings, and aspirations.
Segun Olayinka graduated from OAU, where he studied Law. Although his academic journey was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and an extended strike, which delayed the school calendar, he successfully graduated in September 2024.
When asked about his academic performance, Segun revealed he earned an impressive 4.79 CGPA, the second-highest in the Faculty of Law since its establishment in 1962.
Segun’s interest in Law was sparked by a combination of spiritual guidance, personal ambition, and stories about Gani Fawehinmi, a passionate advocate for justice. Growing up in a village, he observed the struggles of those unable to access justice due to financial constraints. His secondary school days as a debater further cemented his interest in advocacy.
Coming from a modest background, Segun’s father is a cocoa farmer, while his mother trades cocoa on a small scale. As the third child and first son, he became the first in his family to gain admission into a university, though his elder sisters pursued studies at a college of education and a polytechnic.
Segun’s academic journey was fraught with challenges. During his third year, his mother’s complications from diabetes added financial strain, forcing him to take on additional responsibilities. At one point, he contemplated dropping out but found solace and strength in his faith and determination.
Despite setbacks, including a slight dip in his CGPA, he achieved straight A’s in his law courses for the first time during one of the most challenging semesters. He attributes his resilience to God’s guidance and support from family and friends.
Segun’s academic success was built on consistency, dedication, and early preparation. He tailored his study sessions to his most productive hours and made sacrifices to prioritize academics over extracurricular activities. However, he ensured a balance by engaging in internships and professional skill-building activities.
For Segun, his university years reinforced the importance of perseverance and faith in overcoming life’s challenges. His name, “Oluwasegun,” meaning “God has won the battle,” served as a constant reminder of victory amidst trials.
During his convocation, Segun was recognized with 12 prizes, including 11 academic awards and one for being the overall best graduating student.
Segun expressed deep gratitude to God, his family, lecturers, and friends who supported him throughout his journey. He specifically acknowledged Mr. Michael Koyejo, who not only recognized his academic potential but also provided valuable mentorship and resources.
Looking ahead, Segun plans to attend Law School and hopes to secure scholarships for postgraduate studies. He also aims to gain further training through internships at law firms to deepen his professional expertise.
Segun advises those considering a career in Law to remain focused, persevere through challenges, and embrace both the theoretical and practical aspects of legal principles. He encourages students to seek internships and engage in competitions to complement their academic pursuits.
Segun’s story is one of fulfillment and inspiration. He hopes his achievements will motivate others, especially those from similar backgrounds, to strive for excellence and overcome obstacles through faith, determination, and hard work.
