JAMB has spoken on Exam Town Selection, here’s what every candidate should note.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reiterated that it does not select examination towns for candidates taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or the Optional Mock Examination.
Candidates are responsible for choosing their preferred examination towns during registration, and JAMB only allocates available spaces based on capacity.
This clarification has become necessary as 90% of the available slots for the optional mock exercise across the country have been filled, leaving only a few states with vacant spaces.
The remaining states with available slots for the optional mock examination include Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
Candidates who wish to participate in the mock examination but have not yet secured a slot are encouraged to select examination towns within these states.
However, JAMB warns that once the capacity for a particular town is reached, it will no longer be available for selection.
The Board has observed a growing trend of candidates making unusual choices regarding examination towns, possibly in an attempt to secure a slot for the mock examination.
Many candidates select towns that are significantly distant from their homes, states, or regions, only to later complain about being assigned far-off locations.
JAMB stresses that it should not be blamed for such decisions, as candidates have complete control over the town they select.
The purpose of the optional mock examination is to provide interested candidates with an opportunity to experience the Computer-Based Test (CBT) environment before the actual UTME.
It also allows JAMB to test its examination facilities ahead of the main exam. The Board does not intend for this exercise to cause undue stress for either candidates or administrators, which is why examination town selection is solely based on available capacity.
Candidates are strongly advised to choose their examination towns wisely, keeping in mind factors such as travel distance, logistics, and convenience.
This will help prevent unnecessary challenges on the examination day. Once a town is fully booked, no further slots will be available in that location, and candidates must select from the remaining options.
JAMB urges all candidates to make informed choices during registration and avoid selecting distant examination towns unless they are fully prepared for the travel implications. The Board remains committed to ensuring a seamless examination process for all candidates.
UTME IS NOT A SCHOOL-BASED REGISTRATION – JAMB WARNS CBT CENTRES
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres to strictly follow registration guidelines. The Board emphasized that UTME registration is an individual process, not a group or school-based activity, as such practices can lead to data errors, mismatches, and other complications. Any centre found violating this rule risks suspension, and those under investigation for malpractice may have their approval withdrawn.
JAMB also reiterated that only candidates who pass biometric verification on exam day will be allowed to sit for the Mock-UTME or UTME. Additionally, parents and proxies are strictly prohibited from making transactions or interfering with candidates’ profiles to prevent data alterations.
To ensure compliance, JAMB has strengthened its surveillance measures and warned that any centre engaging in infractions will face consequences. A smooth registration process is essential for a successful examination, and the Board remains committed to maintaining strict oversight.
