Joshua Beckford, the youngest person to study at Oxford University at age six, is a child prodigy excelling in academics, medicine, and advocacy, using his platform to support education, autism awareness, and mentorship across multiple countries, including Nigeria.
Joshua Beckford made history as the youngest person ever to study at Oxford University, gaining worldwide recognition for his exceptional intelligence. At just six years old, he was admitted to an online program designed for gifted children aged eight to 13, where he excelled in Philosophy and History, earning distinctions in both subjects.
His father, Knox Daniel, defied conventional age limits by advocating for his admission, making Joshua the youngest student to ever participate in an Oxford course. His record remains unmatched, with the next youngest Oxford student being at least two years older at the time of admission.
Beckford displayed extraordinary abilities from infancy—he could identify letters and numbers at 10 months old, read fluently by age two and a half, and had already begun learning Japanese and some Mandarin.
With dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon, he has demonstrated remarkable medical knowledge. Using the Microsoft Surgery Simulator, he has mastered complex surgical procedures such as cataract removal, hernia repair, and leg fracture correction. His proficiency with surgical instruments showcases a level of skill far beyond his years.
Beyond medicine, Beckford is a gifted artist, excels in Information Technology (IT) and sports, and is fluent in multiple languages.
In 2017, he was named Positive Role Model of the Year at the UK’s National Diversity Awards and was listed among the Top 30 Most Extraordinary People by the Illumination Foundation of North Carolina for his societal impact.
He serves as an ambassador for the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), supporting education for low-income families across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, where he was born.
Diagnosed with high-functioning autism, Beckford also leads the National Autistic Society’s Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) campaign, using his platform to raise awareness.
In 2019, Beckford and his father visited Nigeria for a live mentoring session, delivering a keynote speech at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to nearly 5,000 attendees. Their visit aimed to raise funds for a secondary school in Kaduna State to provide education for underprivileged children.
According to UNILAG’s official statement, the proposed Joshua Beckford Community School was set to include classrooms, an administrative block, a laboratory, an ICT center, and an agriculture green garden, further solidifying his commitment to education and social change.
