At 80, Vietnam War veteran Linwood Riddick fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning a music degree from South Carolina State University, honoring civil rights heroes and proving it’s never too late to pursue education.

allscho Linwood Riddick, an 80-year-old Vietnam War veteran from Virginia, has fulfilled a lifelong promise by graduating from South Carolina State University (SC State) with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Industry—an achievement decades in the making.
After serving in the military during the Vietnam War while many of his peers pursued college, Riddick postponed his academic ambitions. He went on to operate a successful souvenir business for over 30 years, retiring at 72. Yet, his desire to earn a college degree never faded.
His educational journey was sparked unexpectedly during a walk across SC State’s campus when he overheard a conversation about the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre—a tragic event where police opened fire on protesting students, injuring many and killing three. Deeply moved by the sacrifice of those students, Riddick resolved to enroll at SC State to honor their legacy.
Keeping that promise, he commuted 45 minutes each day from Summerville, South Carolina, to attend classes and became a devoted member of the university’s concert choir. His presence and dedication became well known across campus.
During graduation, SC State President Alexander Conyers paused the ceremony to recognize Riddick before he even took the stage, calling him an inspiration. The audience gave him a standing ovation as he proudly received his diploma—a moment he had worked tirelessly to reach.
Reflecting on the experience, Riddick shared that attending college helped keep his mind sharp and spirit energized. “Your mind, your body, your soul and spirit—they must be utilized,” he said.
Now, Riddick hopes his journey serves as a message to others that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and make a meaningful impact.
