Nigerian Scholar Overcomes Loss, Earns First-Class Degree and Master’s in Mathematics from U.S. University

After losing his father just before university, Nigerian scholar Stephen Sunday Adebowale defied the odds to earn a First-Class Bachelor’s in Mathematics from LAUTECH and a Master’s degree from Ohio University, excelling in public health research and teaching

Stephen Sunday Adebowale, a resilient and gifted Nigerian student, has earned a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from Ohio University, USA, after graduating with a First-Class Bachelor’s degree from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

Stephen’s academic path was shaped by personal tragedy—he lost his father just before his post-UTME exam in 2015. Despite the heartbreak and an initial low score that threatened his admission, a rare score revision unexpectedly raised his aggregate, leading to his admission to study Pure and Applied Mathematics at LAUTECH.

Though his first choice was Civil Engineering, Stephen grew to love Mathematics. He worked tirelessly, endured hardship, and leaned on faith to overcome the obstacles he faced. His perseverance paid off when he graduated with top honors.

In 2023, Stephen gained admission to Ohio University, where he completed a two-year master’s program with a focus on disease modeling, public health research, and mathematical optimization. While there, he served as a Teaching Assistant, mentoring fellow students and applying his knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Stephen attributes his success to divine intervention, determination, and the unwavering support of family, friends, and mentors. He dedicates his achievements to his late father, saying, “This achievement is as much his as it is mine.”

Now looking to the future, Stephen plans to further his research and make a lasting impact in the field of mathematics and public health.
