After facing numerous rejections, Bright Senyo Gadzo, a resilient Ghanaian student and former NSMQ participant, secured a $92,000 scholarship from the CKODON Foundation to study Electrical Engineering at Caltech, and now aims to give back by supporting Ghana’s power sector and mentoring other aspiring scholars.

After enduring a long journey filled with setbacks and rejections, Bright Senyo Gadzo, a determined young Ghanaian, has secured a prestigious scholarship to pursue Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), one of the world’s leading engineering institutions.
A participant in Ghana’s 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Bright remained resilient despite receiving countless rejection letters from universities. His perseverance finally paid off when he was awarded a fully funded scholarship worth over $92,000 by the CKODON Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting talented students.
“I’ve read the phrase ‘we regret to inform you’ more times than I can count. But I kept going, believing there was a chance for that one acceptance letter,” Bright shared.
His motivation was reignited after learning that his former classmate, Francisca Lamini, had gained admission to Harvard University. “We graduated with the same scores. If she made it to Harvard, I knew I had a chance too,” he explained.
With renewed determination and support from CKODON, Bright reapplied and was finally accepted into Caltech.
“Rejection letters from even safety schools were discouraging. But then Caltech turned all my doubts into joy,” he said.
Bright’s Vision for the Future
After completing his studies, Bright plans to return to Ghana to contribute to the country’s power sector. He also aims to assist other young students navigating financial and academic hurdles on their path to higher education abroad.
