UNIPORT has debunked a viral rumour about a snake “deity” sighting on campus, calling it entirely false and warning the public to ignore such fear-mongering misinformation.
The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dismissed a viral social media report claiming that a snake—described as a “deity”—was found and killed in one of its classrooms or hostels. The report, which circulated alongside a voice note, sparked panic among students and parents.
In a statement released Wednesday, UNIPORT’s spokesperson, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, clarified that no such incident occurred on campus and described the story as entirely fabricated.
“There was no snake sighting, no killing, and no such event took place anywhere within the university,” Kpenu said. “These rumours are baseless and the work of individuals seeking cheap popularity through fear-mongering.”
He urged students, staff, and the public to ignore the misinformation and rely solely on official university channels for credible updates. The university also noted that it is taking steps to identify and report those responsible for spreading the falsehood.
