Suspected Cultists Kill Ondo Polytechnic Student

A 25-year-old Rufus Giwa Polytechnic student, Ayodele Peter, was brutally killed in Owo, Ondo State, in a suspected cult-related attack, prompting police to arrest one suspect and launch a manhunt for others while assuring residents of heightened security.

A 25-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, has been killed in a suspected cult-related attack.

The victim, identified as Ayodele Peter, was reportedly murdered in the Opomulero area of Owo following what security sources believe was a violent clash linked to rival cult groups operating within the institution.

The incident occurred while Ayodele was still mourning the death of his mother, who passed away approximately three weeks earlier.

According to findings, the attackers forcefully gained access to his residence and launched a brutal assault on him. The commotion attracted the attention of nearby students, including individuals suspected to be cult members, who rushed to the scene but found Ayodele critically injured.

He was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, where doctors later confirmed his death.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Kazeem, stated that the command received a distress call reporting that the student had been shot by suspected cultists. He said police operatives were promptly deployed to the area with tactical and intelligence support.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Kazeem disclosed that a manhunt was launched for those responsible, leading to the arrest of one suspect who is currently in custody and has provided useful information to investigators. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects who are still at large.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, praised the swift response of officers involved, describing it as evidence of the command’s improved operational readiness.

He reassured residents of the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that security has been reinforced across the state, especially during and after the festive period.

The police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report suspicious activities, emphasizing that community collaboration remains vital to maintaining public safety.
