A 100-level student of Federal University of Technology Akure, Favour Olaniyi, was found dead near the school’s North Gate, prompting an investigation by the Nigeria Police Force while the university offers support to affected students.

A tragic incident has shaken the community of Federal University of Technology Akure after the body of a 23-year-old first-year student, Favour Olaniyi, was discovered in a bush close to the institution’s North Gate.

The deceased, who was studying Surveying and Geoinformatics, was reportedly found under circumstances that led to widespread speculation among students and residents. An empty container believed to have contained a harmful chemical substance was allegedly recovered near the scene when the body was discovered.

The shocking development drew attention from many students and people living around the university environment, with several gathering in groups to discuss the unfortunate event and express disbelief over the tragedy.

Speaking on the incident, the university’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, confirmed that the institution had informed the student’s family about the situation. He explained that the university management immediately alerted security agencies after receiving reports of the incident. According to him, school medical personnel and security officers worked together with the police to move the body to the mortuary.

Adebanjo also stated that the university is cooperating fully with investigators as efforts continue to determine the exact cause of death. He added that the Students Affairs Division has continued to provide counselling and emotional support for students who may be affected by the incident, encouraging students facing personal or emotional challenges to seek help and guidance whenever necessary.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that detectives have started an investigation into the matter. He noted that officers who visited the scene did not observe visible signs of violence on the deceased’s body. According to him, the corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and further examination while investigations continue to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death.
