A Facebook user, Martin Beck Nworah, sparked debate after suggesting that National Youth Service Corps members be deployed to secure Abuja following the closure of the United States Embassy in Abuja over security concerns.

A Nigerian man has stirred reactions online after suggesting that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should be deployed to help defend the nation’s capital, Abuja.
His comment comes in the wake of the temporary closure of the United States Embassy in Abuja, which halted visa appointments due to rising security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory.
The man, identified as Martin Beck Nworah on Facebook, proposed that corps members currently serving in Abuja should be the first to be mobilized, followed by those in major cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt, as well as other state capitals. However, he noted that those posted to rural areas, especially teachers, should be exempted from such deployment.
His suggestion has since sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the practicality and safety of involving corps members in security operations.
It will be recalled that the U.S. Embassy in Abuja was shut on March 4, 2026, over fears of possible protests linked to global tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which could pose risks to staff and citizens. Although visa services were disrupted, consular sections in Abuja and Lagos remained functional, and affected applicants were advised to await rescheduling updates.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of State approved the evacuation of non-essential staff and their families from Abuja, citing worsening security conditions.
